- &CWH01New - Begin a new puzzle
- "New" clears the current puzzle and erases all clues from
- memory. If you have made changes to the current puzzle, but
- have not saved your work, New will warn you.
- &CWH02Open - Retrieve a puzzle
- "Open" reads a puzzle file and its corresponding clue file into
- memory so you can edit or print an existing crossword.

- Name .... Select a puzzle from the displayed list.

- "Save" writes a copy of the current puzzle to disk.

- puzzle is new (an "UNTITLED" puzzle), CWC automatically switches
- to "Save As".
- &CWH04Save As - Change the puzzle name/title
- "Save As" is identical to "Save", except that you are given the
- opportunity to rename the puzzle and/or change its title.

- Name .... Type the primary (8-character) part of a DOS
- filename. This is the external, disk filename
- of your puzzle and clues.

- Title ... Type up to four lines. Crossword Creator
- automatically centers this title above the

- &CWH05Import - Read words/clues from a file
- "Import" reads a disk file containing words and/or clues
- directly into Crossword Creator. Both "ASCII text" files and
- "comma-delimited" files are supported.

- Name ...... Type the name of the file you wish to import.
- Include the drive ID and/or directory name if
- necessary.

- Contents .. Indicate whether the file contains only words,
- or both words and clues.

- before adding new ones.

- &CWH06Export - Create a text file
- "Export" writes a copy of the current puzzle to a

- "Proof Format" allows you to customize the clue section of the

- &CWH09DOS Shell - Execute DOS commands
- "DOS Shell" temporarily suspends Crossword Creator in memory,
- and presents you with the DOS command line. To get back to
- Crossword Creator, type

- at the DOS command prompt and press Enter.
- &CWH10Exit - End Crossword Creator
- "Exit" terminates Crossword Creator and returns you to DOS. If
- you have made changes to the current puzzle but have not saved
- your work, Exit will warn you.
- &CWH11Undo - Restore a changed puzzle line
- "Undo" allows you to reverse the effect of a recent puzzle edit
- action.

- Undo works on a line-by-line basis. As long as you have not
- moved the cursor off of the edited line, your action can be
- undone. Once you move to another line, however, your edit
- action becomes permanent.
- &CWH12Edit Clues - Supply clues for each word
- "Edit Clues" allows you to input the text of your puzzle clues.

- Across/Down .. Type up to four clue lines for each word.

- Delete ....... ON: Deletes the clue.

- OFF: Keeps the clue.

- the puzzle.

- &CWH13Pick List - Display the search results
- A "pick list" is displayed if the search function locates any
- matching words or previously-written clues. If you wish to use
- one of the words or clues in the current puzzle, simply select
- it from the list.

- Pick lists are presented automatically, at intervals of 50
- words, as the search progresses.

- Words/Clues .... Select the word or clue you wish to use.

- Continue ....... Display the next page (interval) of

- &CWH14Edit Bank - Supply a word list
- "Edit Bank" allows you to add words to, or delete words from,
- the word bank. You can enter complete words, or use the search
- function to scan your data files for words that match a
- letter-pattern you specify. A pattern may contain letters of
- the alphabet or wildcards (any non-alpha character). For
- example, B??L??S is a valid pattern.

- or a letter pattern to search for.

- &CWH15Auto Place - Build the puzzle grid
- "Auto Place" assists you in building a puzzle grid by
- automatically intersecting the words you supply.

- Word ...... Type the word you want CWC to "place" for you.

- Bank ...... If the word you wish to place is already in
- the word bank, you don't have to retype it.
- Simply select the word from the bank.

- Freeform .. CWC searches the entire Puzzle Window looking
- for potential intersections.

- Template .. CWC constrains its search to the "template"
- shape you have drawn in the Puzzle Window.
-
- Robot ..... ON: CWC attempts to build a complete puzzle,
- using the words currently present in the
- word bank.
-
- OFF: CWC attempts to place only the single
- word you typed or selected from the word
- bank.
-
- Long Words First .. ON: The robot sorts the word bank into
- descending order by word length,
- so that longer words are tried
- first.

- OFF: The robot tries words in the order
- that they were originally added to
- the word bank.

- Limits .... Type the highest row and column number that
- CWC should consider when searching for
- potential word placements. This enables you
- to constrain the size of your puzzle to
- specific dimensions.

- Across .... Begin the placement search. CWC will
- initially try to place your word in the
- "Across" orientation (horizontally), but will
- switch to "Down" if necessary.

- Down ...... Identical to "Across...", except that the
- initial placement orientation is "Down"
- (vertical).

- Cancel .... Dismiss the dialog without placing any words.
- &CWH16Auto Place - Confirm the word placement
- "Auto Place" presents a "confirmation" dialog whenever a
- potential word location is found, and the "robot" setting is
- OFF. If the "robot" setting is ON, words are automatically
- placed at the first available intersection.

- Ok ........ Place the word in the puzzle. The proposed
- location is displayed with blinking letters.

- Continue .. Skip the proposed location, and continue
- searching.

- &CWH17Unplace All - Remove words from the grid
- "Unplace All" removes all words from the grid, and places them
- into the word bank. Existing clues are not disturbed. When
- used in conjunction with "Auto Place", this tool enables you to
- build alternate puzzle grids from the same set of words.

- Since the existing grid will be erased, "Unplace All" gives you
- a chance to save your work, if necessary, before proceeding.
- &CWH18Review Clues - Find missing/orphan clues
- "Review Clues" helps you identify and correct errors in your
- clue definitions by displaying the puzzle words, the text of
- their corresponding clues, and the index numbers.

- &CWH19Hints - Use short-cut hint functions
- "Hints" makes it easy to add or remove hinted letters from your

- letter at a time) if these pre-defined functions don't meet your
- needs.
